The beauty of bedtime

I am blessed with a child who sleeps very well through the night. Once he goes to bed, barring a need to use the restroom, he’s there for the night. No jack-in-the-box bedtimes here. A rarity with a young child, so I hear. Though, at times, I’d like to think perhaps we “earned this”, as he didn’t sleep through the night well until nearly turning one, and the routine leading up to a successful bedtime has always been rather long. When he was just a baby, it was diaper change, pajamas, brushing teeth, two books, followed by a final feeding, and then rocking and snuggling to Jack Johnson’s “Good People” twice, then waiting for the drowsy eyes and slowly, ever so gently, laying him in his crib. As we shifted away from diapers and final night feedings, the routine morphed into bath, pajamas, brush teeth, a story or two, and [...]

Target & Neiman Marcus team up for holiday gift collection

I love Target. I go all too often. Enough that I’ve joked I may as well send 1/3 of my check directly there (and in turn, I’d like to be able to just pick what I want whenever I go — seems fair, yes?). I’ve never been to a Neiman Marcus store, nor a city that housed a Neiman Marcus to my awareness, but I know their products are of a certain level of luxury I simply don’t seek out. (Hint: I probably can’t afford a key chain there.) But, this holiday season, the two stores have joined forces in order to introduce a line of designer created gift items (53 items in total that I can see) and as of today, the collection is viewable online (though not yet available for purchase). It seems as though the idea for this collaboration is to make designer items within reach for [...]

And in beauty news: MAC is about to put out their prettiest collection ever.

At least in my opinion. I love MAC cosmetics, and use a number of items from their line daily. I’ve yet to find a better foundation (for my skin at least) than MAC Studio Fix Fluid, and I’ve been using Studio Fix powder for 10 years now. Beyond their face makeup however, I’ve found MAC to offer some of the prettiest, most unique eye and lip colors around, and I have a hard time going to the mall without stopping in to see what’s new. As a member of their mailing list, I receive post cards introducing their latest color lines and the products offered, but often they’re a bit out there for my taste. Super bold colors or looks that are made for the runway, but take tweaking to turn into an everyday look for a girl who’s never (nor will ever) work a runway. (I like food way [...]

Recipe: Super delicious cheese & broccoli soup

I love broccoli. I was never that kid who fought her mom about eating broccoli growing up. In fact, this week, I bought the BIG bag of broccoli from the grocery store, and hubby commented, “Wow, we had broccoli twice already this week, and you’ve still got more.” Yup. He’s so thrilled. (Where is a sarcasm font when you need it?) Anyway, if you like broccoli, and you like cheese, then you’ll like this soup! Especially on a cold day when you want to feel warm and cozy. I chose a day that turned out to be 89 degrees out. Not my best call, but oh well — we’re talking cheese! Super Delicious Cheese & Broccoli Soup What you need: 2 T butter 2 T flour 1/2 onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic 1 cup of milk 1 cup half n half 4 cups chicken broth 3 carrots, grated finely [...]

Pin-tested: Make your own jewelry soak

Sometimes you see something pinned on Pinterest over and over and over and you have to wonder: Is it really worth all the attention? In our series Pin-tested we take something you’ve seen a thousand times on Pinterest and put it to the test. It was the weekend, so obviously, it was time to test out pins from my boards. (Duh.) I tried several things actually — 1. Using a pillow case to dust my ceiling fan blades (win!) 2. Trying to remove white spots on my wooden kitchen table using mayonnaise (epic fail) 3. Making my own jewelry soak (win!). Since the jewelry soak trick is a very visual process with a clear before and after result, I thought I’d snap a few pics as I went along, to share with you, if I was successful, and here I am, so you know it worked! The jewelry soak recipe required a [...]

Recipe: Cashew chicken stir fry & coconut rice with peas

It’s finally cool outside, enough so that I don’t mind warming up my kitchen to cook again, which is GREAT! The bad part though, is natural light is all but fading away by the time dinner is ready, so sadly, my already so-so photos become worse. Boo. Regardless, I put together a few ingredients and pulled off a chicken stir-fry dish that was quite tasty tonight, and pretty easy too, so I thought I’d share it with you. Cashew Chicken Stir Fry What you’ll need: 1.5 lbs boneless skinless chicken breast, trimmed and cut into small bite sized pieces 1.5 T. cooking oil (canola, vegetable) 3 T. soy sauce 1 t. rice wine vinegar 2 t. sugar 2.5 t. cornstarch 2 cloves garlic, minced thinly sliced green onion (amount for topping, to taste) one small handful cashews, finely chopped for topping What to do: Place the chicken in a bowl [...]

Grocery prices are soaring! Or, is it just me?

I consider myself to be a fairly frugal shopper. I’m not an extreme couponer, but I do meal plan, make lists based only on what I need, search for coupons (using Target.com/coupons and Fresh & Easy’s weekly emails). For awhile, I tried shopping every other week, and while I loved having an extra day in the weekend that I didn’t have to go out, and I did save money overall, I hated the food options I had left when it got down to the second half of week two. Also, planning meals for 14 days seemed like such an arduous task vs. 7 days. So, I went back to weekly shopping. Lately however, I’ve noticed my grocery spending has significantly increased. I’m not really doing anything differently (other than shopping weekly again vs. biweekly) but our overall grocery spending has reached about $120 a week for our small family. (My [...]

The 10 things kids really want most from their parents

Parenting. Like, whoa. There’s no guide — no regular progress reports with specific measures, no letter grades and no buzzers or bells when you screw up or get things right. I’d imagine most parents have wondered at some point (or more realistically at many points) “Am I cutting it? Am I meeting my child’s needs?” I recently stumbled across a post by Erin Kurt, featured on one of my favorite sites, LifeHack entitled “The Top Ten Things Children Really Want Their Parents To Do With Them.” The author, a 16 year teaching veteran surveyed her class every Mother’s Day asking what things their mother or guardian did with them that really made them feel happy or loved. She collected these answers throughout her career, always asking her students the same question. What she discovered was that the things that children actually wanted most from the parents, were so simple really [...]

Pin-tested: Melt in your mouth M&M sugar cookies

Sometimes you see something pinned on Pinterest over and over and over and you have to wonder: Is it really worth all the attention? In our series Pin-tested we take something you’ve seen a thousand times on Pinterest and put it to the test. The pin that caught my eye this time included a photo of sugar cookies that looked chewy and sparkled with sugar — oh, and M&Ms. They were completely infested with M&Ms in the best of ways. So, on Sunday night, kiddo and I gave it a try. The recipe came from Joyful Momma’s Kitchen, who modified it from a recipe by The Girl Who Ate Everything. Sheesh. No wonder the kitchen is filled with joy and the girl ate everything — these cookies are amazeballs. Really. Here is the recipe, as it appears on Joyful Momma’s Kitchen (check out her post for more detailed photos of the process) [...]

Recipe: Amazingly easy three-ingredient dinner -- Ravizagna

This recipe is one I found in Real Simple magazine years back and tweaked to my liking. The prep time is 3-5 minutes max, and the cost is only $1.75 per hearty serving. This dish is so easy, I’m quite certain if he knew how to work a can opener and was allowed to use the oven alone, my five-year-old could make it solo. So, save this recipe, because the next time you want a hot, tasty meal on the table with the absolute least amount of effort, you’ll be glad you have it. Ravizagna (as yummy as lasagna, but made easier with ravioli!) What you need: One large package refrigerated or frozen (no need to defrost, just add 7 minutes to cooking time) ravioli (I use cheese or cheese and spinach) One bag (2 cups) of shredded mozzarella and Parmesan mix (or 1 cup of each if you can’t [...]
