The joys of post-menopausal bra shopping

I have been shopping for bras lately. This is serious bra shopping, because I need serious support. I’m even willing to pay full price. Why? — you might ask, of someone who, in the past, did all her bra shopping in Marshall’s and Ross and various clearance racks. Well, I have gained quite a bit of weight in the years since I was blessed with menopause, and the old sizes just don’t do it anymore. Seriously. They don’t even remember my name. So that means tromping into the lingerie department with my new measurements (who KNEW there was such a size as 42G?), digging through racks and racks of shiny bras with deep, echoing cups and complicated hook closures, in varying shades of beige, and looking for all the world like they were made for Bertha Butt of the Butt sisters … yet they still manage to be too tight [...]

Not-so-old dog learns new tricks

One is never too old to grow and learn. That’s what I decided when I right-clicked my way into the program at UC Berkeley for a marketing certificate. Most of the classes are online, but I truly tingled when I discovered a good, full-day class on the Berkeley Campus that I could commute to on Saturdays. Wow. I’m going to school… A really good school. Neato. Spiffy. Super. College kids say stuff like that: neato and spiffy. I had some concerns about my stamina. I travel a lot during the week. Berkeley is yet another long drive. When shall I nap? I like naps. What I didn’t count on was the stimulating feeling of a college campus beneath my feet and how good it would feel to be there. I was listening to fascinating stuff and taking notes in an uncomfortable chair. All day. It physically felt good. Euphoric! Cute [...]

Rich or poor?

Have you ever wondered if you are rich or poor? I know. It’s so hard to do that complicated math. Fear not Patriots; the Romney Presidential campaign is here to answer this difficult and soul searching question for us. The answer: If you own a microwave, you aren’t really poor. Now wasn’t that easy? I’m not making this up. The microwave theory on the economy is brought to us by Kevin A. Hassett and Aparna Mathur. Both are resident scholars at The American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research. Mr. Hassett is also an economic advisor to Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney. Hassett and Mathur wrote an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal titled, “Consumption and the Myths of Inequality.” To judge where we are economically, they elect to look at our level of consumption rather than pre-tax earning. “The percentage of low-income households with microwave ovens grew to 92.4% [...]

Great Family Fun: Things to Do in Fresno

With the current economic situation and gas prices nearing $5 per gallon here in California, thinking of a family vacation can be near impossible. Still, you don’t have to stay home every weekend; step into your own backyard and  check out some of the fun things to do in  Fresno. (Be sure to take one or two of those great credit cards with low APR’s, just in case you find other interesting activities you hadn’t planned on!) Remember, this is an in-state vacation, and less expensive than visiting another state or country so you can afford to splurge a little. Here are just a few of the great, family-fun places you can visit in the Fresno area: Rotary Storyland and Playland  This is a family-fun packed theme land filled with incredible treasures , that’s been a local family favorite for more than 50 years. This small, inexpensive theme park is a great place [...]

You Gotta Fight For Your Right… If You’re A Woman. Still.

I am a twenty-something year old woman. I am on the cusp of earning my Bachelor’s Degree in the spring (I’m a bit of a procrastinator) and making plans after that to earn my teaching credential and my (first) Master’s. I work over thirty hours per week and am currently enrolled in six classes (and a lab). I live with my husband and our dog and we have a mortgage, a car payment, health insurance and other bills to address. I pay taxes and have no criminal history. I am what many would generally consider to be a responsible adult. My husband and I don’t want to have kids (let’s leave that topic for some other time). So another part of being a responsible adult — as well as taking control of my own life — means that I have been on birth control for a long time. At first, [...]

To Whom It May Concern: Housework without nagging & supervisor struggles

The Full Moxie is pleased to offer our advice column, “To Whom It May Concern.” Our respondent, “Yours truly,” is a relational and communications expert with a Masters in Communication, and is also an experienced university instructor on the subject. To Whom It May Concern, How do you get your significant other to pitch in around the house with chores without nagging? Leading by example is definitely not working. Waiting until things get bad and seeing if they are dealt with is not working either. What’s a positive, yet proactive solution? -Sick of the mess Dear Sick of the mess, It’s 2011, you’d think at this point society would have found a solution to the one area of our lives that not a single person enjoys. I’m at a loss to why the lady with the easy glide mop looks so happy on the commercial; I’ve concluded its Botox gone [...]

Dressing Fabulous on a Budget: 4 tips to expand your wardrobe, but not your credit card debt

If you’re a fashion lover like me — but without the income to fund your shopping addiction — you really have to learn how to look fabulous within your financial means. It’s tough work, but it’s not impossible. The good news is that you don’t have to spend a ton of money to actually dress well and buy all high-priced designer clothing. That little bit of wisdom should help ease your mind and your poor credit card debt at the same time. A unique personality and imagination is really all you need to dress in style. After all, when you’re confident, you’re always fashionable, right? Plus if you have the skill of sewing at your disposal (I’m not talking about seamstress quality, just a knack for small alterations) you can always create your own stylish wardrobe for very little money. Patience helps as well and will guide you as you [...]

Lessons in Lingerie

Stop wearing underwear. That’s what Rebecca Apsan suggests in her new book, right under the chapter called “Introduction.” Now what, I ask, is the point of going commando in a $15.95 paperback called “Lessons in Lingerie: Finding Your Perfect Shade of Seduction”? Doubling down on the entendre, this sassy little Workman Press volume edged in pink lace has the most bodacious black lingerie ensemble on the front cover that I have ever seen. I want that, and I want it now! What the author means, you will quickly divine from flipping pages, is exactly the opposite. Stop wearing underwear — and start wearing lingerie. What’s the difference? Girlfriends, get ready to romp. I interviewed Rebecca on the phone the other day, and I’ve got to say, she is the sassy sorority sister I never had; the naughty auntie everyone needs. She talks a lot about “the tease” in her book, so [...]

To Whom It May Concern: On showing appreciation and affection

The Full Moxie is pleased to offer our advice column, “To Whom It May Concern.” Our respondent, “Yours truly,” is a relational and communications expert with a Masters in Communication, and is also an experienced university instructor on the subject.   To Whom It May Concern, How necessary are traditional, hand-written thank you cards these days? Isn’t a sincere, in-person thank you enough? (My mother-in-law would disagree…) -Thankful, but short on time   Dear Thankful, During my last road trip, a discussion on proper thank-you note etiquette came up. I’m not kidding or humoring you, truly this happened. Thankfully (pun intended) I have some thoughts on the topic. First, know I am not Emily Post and cannot guarantee that the various frameworks I provide for any given situation will be the most “polite” or “appropriate.” Ladies, I do not aim to please. I merely state it how I see it. [...]

The curve ball is harder than the strike out… and other things I learned on the job

Most of you may not remember a time when people displayed their porn instead of watching it on the Internet. My first full-time job was at a machine shop.  Most of the employees’ red Craftsman toolboxes had at least one naked woman taped to it.  One morning, after the gut truck left (that’s what we used to call today’s “Catering Trucks”), my boss gestured me over with his finger.  I marched past half a dozen March pinups and stood in front of him with my donut.  He leaned into my ear, his chin brushing my shoulder and confided, “I just wanted to see if I could make you c** with my finger.”  I laughed and took it in the harmless, dirty-old-man spirit in which it was intended. The look on my face must have betrayed my laughter though because he never said anything like that to me again. I wasn’t [...]
