This morning marks my last morning of any kind of solace for the next few months. At noon today, my home will be descended upon with a locust-like frenzy of children, fresh out of school for the summer.
My mornings, once filled with writing, cleaning, the busywork of running a website, the constant company of my grunting dog, Lucy, and blessed, delicious SILENCE, will now be punctuated with the sounds of tween TV shows and Justin Bieber warblings, demand-like requests for food and declarations of boredom. The singular voice of the 9-year old will be multiplied at 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. as the teen population rises, and eventually at 1:00 p.m. when the 20-year-olds decide to roll out of bed and grace us with their lazy presences. Needy, mess-making and naturally self-focused children all gnashing their tireless maws, mowing down all the comforts of my solitude. Starting today. At noon.
…oh, the joys that face me.
In celebration of summer, I have thus decided to make some of my FAVORITE cookies on the planet: Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies … after I make a quick trip to the store to buy more chocolate chips (because certain 9- and 20-year-olds have cleaned me fresh out).
