NPR journalist Matt Stiles has posted the following infographic showing which birth dates are the most common. It’s really kind of interesting to see which dates are most, and least, popular.

As expected, holidays like Christmas and the Fourth of July are among the least common, the actual least common date being February 29.

Also not surprising (to me, anyway), is the stretch in September hosting the most common birth dates. My birthday is September 13th, and I’m used to sharing parties and attention with other September babies. It’s interesting to me, though, that in that stretch, the 13th is less common. I guess some women are superstitious enough to avoid giving birth on such an “unlucky” day.

The random dates with high birth rates — August 12, October 1, December 3o — are interesting. Any guesses as to why those dates might be so popular? If you have a theory, I’d love to hear it!

  1. My birthday is in the SUPER LESS COMMON OMG WHO DOES THAT column. Except nine months earlier is February, and isn’t that supposed to be a love month? Whatevs.

  2. I was going to say the same thing as Traci… all the sex is going on in February!

  3. I don’t know why I got all excited about that! lol

  4. Except I’m also wrong because September minus 9 does not equal February. Clearly I need my coffee this morning.

  5. See? Thinking about sex makes us all a little dumber. ;)

  6. The September birthdays are concentrated about 9 months after most Christmas and New Year parties are going on. In fact, if you look at it, the higher concentration of births is in the 3 months that are 9 months after cold weather starts in the northern hemisphere. My son was conceived in October, born in July. Daughter conceived a couple of days after New Year’s day, born at the end of September.
